IPTV buffers when the stream cannot be delivered as fast as it plays. The cause is usually the wireless link at the device, the provider’s server under evening load, or a codec falling back to software decoding — rarely your broadband package. Work through the eight checks below in order.
First, find out which side is failing
One test saves most of the work: play a different channel from a different source region. If everything buffers, the problem is your side. If only one channel buffers, the problem is that stream or its server, and nothing you change locally will fix it.
1. Measure the speed at the device, not the router
A 500 Mbps line means nothing if the stick behind the television is getting 12 Mbps. Check the figure the device itself reports — on Roku under Settings → Network → About, on Fire TV under Settings → Network. You want a sustained 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.
2. Move the streaming stick off the back of the TV
A metal-backed panel sits directly between the stick’s antenna and your router. Use the HDMI extender that came in the box. This is the single highest-yield fix on this list and it costs nothing.
3. Move to 5 GHz, or use a cable
The 2.4 GHz band is shared with every neighbouring router, microwave and doorbell, which is why buffering so often appears in the evening and vanishes at 7am. Force 5 GHz in the device’s network settings. Ethernet, where the device supports it, removes the variable entirely.
4. Check whether decoding is on the GPU
A stream that has fallen back to software decoding stutters while the device heats up, and it looks exactly like a network problem. Open the stats overlay — Ctrl+I on Windows, Cmd+I on Mac, or the info button on TV platforms — and check the decoder line names your hardware. 5. Rule out a connection limit
One line plays one stream at a time. When a second device starts, the symptom is rarely a clear message — usually stuttering or a stream that stops after a few seconds. Close the app everywhere else and try again.
6. Increase the buffer
Under Settings → Playback → Buffer size, a larger buffer absorbs brief network dips at the cost of a slower channel change. This treats the symptom rather than the cause, which is occasionally the right trade.
7. Look at heat
If playback is fine for forty minutes and then degrades, that is thermal throttling rather than networking. Streaming sticks in a warm cabinet or pressed against a panel throttle reliably. Give the device air.
8. Test at a different time of day
If the same channel is flawless at 10am and unwatchable at 8pm, the constraint is congestion — either on your local Wi-Fi, at your ISP, or on the provider’s servers. The first two you can act on. If it is our servers, tell us — that is ours to fix.

Consistency beats headline speed. A stable 15 Mbps outperforms a 200 Mbps line that drops for two seconds a minute, because a two-second drop is a visible stall and the extra 185 Mbps buys you nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Will a VPN stop buffering?
Usually not, and often the reverse — a VPN adds a hop and its own capacity limit. It only helps in the specific case where an ISP is throttling that traffic, which you would need to establish first rather than assume.
Why does only one channel buffer?
That stream or its server is the problem, not your connection. Report the specific channel to us; there is no local setting that fixes an overloaded server, but we can usually move you to another source.
Does a faster broadband package help?
Only if you are genuinely short of bandwidth at the device. Most buffering complaints turn out to be wireless signal, congestion or codec fallback, all of which survive an upgrade unchanged.
Why is 4K worse than HD on the same connection?
4K needs three to five times the bitrate and usually HEVC decoding. If the device cannot decode HEVC in hardware it falls back to software, which stutters regardless of network speed.
